Garbage Count 3936 Kgs

This morning I thought my contact lenses were fogged over until Walter asked me if there was something burning in Base Camp. Alas, there was no such drama and I never could pinpoint the reason why there was a light haze over camp. In any case, it was another beautiful sunny day in paradise ...   read more»

Garbage Count: 3360 Kilograms

For those who have been wondering why your beloved Dawa Steven hasn’t been posting updates everyday let me explain a few things. It turns out that it really is not the best idea to use electronics in the freezing cold of the night. Though I may have been able to save my fingers from turning ...   read more»

Base Camp Slumber

April 25 2009, 02:27 am

Garbage Count = 1914Kgs (not including helicopter wreckage parts)

The animal that is base camp has become slow and sleepy. It slumbers all day and occasionally stirs or shakes with activity, then, it goes back to the same familiar droning. Everyday is a hot Sunday afternoon. Somewhere, seemingly far in the distance, ...   read more»

Apa and Naga Dorji, completed the first part of the spiritual mission set by our spiritual leader, the abbot of Tengpoche Monastery, the Tengpoche Rinpoche. Cash for Trash

April 22 2009, 11:57 am

I have created a monster… my cash for trash program, as everyone likes to call, has taken on a life of its own. I had intended to motivate others to bring garbage down from Everest but never imagined it would be this successful.

After telling Nic that I was paying 100 nepali rupees (US$ 1.25) per kilogram of old ...   read more»

Puja day

April 20 2009, 01:00 am

Today is one of the most important days for our expedition. On this auspicious day, we pray to Chomolungma, Mother goddess of the Earth, otherwise known as Mt. Everest. We request her permission to climb her slopes, ask her forgiveness for disturbing her and beg her to keep us safe from danger.

This is our puja day. A ...   read more»

Settling into Base Camp Life

April 19 2009, 02:29 pm

Finally things are starting to settle down. I am once again able to breathe a little easier. Important I would say, considering I am at 5330 meters and breathing less than half the amount of oxygen available at sea level.

Let me tell you from the offset how proud I am of our base camp, my baby. Going to bed at night for ...   read more»

Last night sleeping in a Bed

April 16 2009, 11:54 am

Our rest day was pretty busy at Lobuche. Yury, Henry, Bill, Nic and I went down to the EVK2CNR research station at 10:30 am. The research station is better known as “the pyramid” and the exterior is completely constructed out of glass. I met my friends from the pyramid who had helped me a lot last year with communications when the ...   read more»

At the Eco Lodge in Lobuche

April 15 2009, 02:16 pm

As you may have noticed by now, the higher in Altitude I go, the worst my writing becomes. Please note this for safety reasons: If I started writing complete gobble-dee-gook, its time to call in the rescue chopper

The whole “Dingboche troupe” got scarved this morning by my aunt and we headed up the hill toward Eco ...   read more»

Rest Day in Dingboche

April 14 2009, 01:00 am

Today, we had our first proper rest day in Dingboche (4410m). There was no need to repack our bags nor get up too early, though a force of habit is hard to reverse. After breakfast, we took advantage of the bright sun; some of us reading, some washing clothes, some of us just basking in the heat.

Another lodge owner, ...   read more»

Blessings for a safe and successful expedition

April 13 2009, 01:00 am

Please accept my apologies for not having posted updates the last couple of days. We have now arrived in Dingboche and the villages from here on in are off the power lines that feed electricity from the Thame Hydro Power station, the main power source for the region. As such, having had a fairly cloudy day yesterday the lodge couldn’t ...   read more»

I had grand plans of photographing the sunrise coming over the Mountains this morning but it was not to be as i stayed up too late last night posting my updates and pictures. Not only did I oversleep, I was woken up by Will Cross of all people. The irony, the shame...

Khumjung Vilage, my favourite place in the world.

April 11 2009, 01:00 am

Although we had agreed to have breakfast at a leisurely 8am everyone was awake and active by six thirty. Apa and Yangjin had gotten up even earlier as their friends from Salt Lake City, Lance and his daughter wanted to go to the Saturday market in Namche, which starts very early. Lance is here with his daughter to donate and set up a ...   read more»

Trek to Thame

April 10 2009, 10:29 pm

Overnight, the rain and hail had turned into sticky snow and we woke up to a bright sunny day. There was an inch of snow laying on all the rooftops and the treetops and film of ice on the ground, reminding us to stop looking around and start looking down if we want to arrive at base camp without broken limbs..
